Leland G. Boyers

Leland George Boyers, age 93, of Wauseon, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016 at Kingston Residency of Perrysburg. He was born in Wauseon on February 28, 1922, the son of the late George and the late Eunice (Clark) Boyers. Leland was a graduate of the Wauseon High School class of 1940. He married Delores Larned on September 8, 1946 and she preceded him in death in 2012. They had been married over 65 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores, sisters, Bertha McMillian, Edith Amstutz, and brothers Glenn, Leo, Bill and Howard Boyers.

Leland leaves behind four children, Tom (Jan) Boyers of Defiance, Joe (Donna) Boyers of Port Chester, NY, Sue (Larry) Weiler of Fostoria and Holly (Ginny Black) Boyers of Wauseon. Leland was blessed with eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was lovingly known as "Uncle Bub" by all his nieces and nephews.

Leland proudly served as a Sergeant in the 83rd Thunderbirds Infantry Division during World War II from August 1942 until November 1945. He was stationed in the European Theater thru the Battle of the Bulge. His battalion landed on the beaches of Normandy following the D-Day invasion adding large artillery support.

When returning from the war, Leland worked as a farmer and carpenter with his father and brothers. He was a general contractor and foreman for the Lathrop Corporation for years. Leland was a member of the Brotherhood of Carpenters Local #248 of Toledo for 55 years.

After his retirement from carpentry he worked for the Fulton County Auditor's office. He continued doing woodworking and antique refinishing work for friends and family.

Leland was an avid sports fan his whole life. Supporting the Wauseon Indians, Detroit Tigers and THE Ohio State Buckeyes. He was a certified slow pitch softball umpire for years, traveling around Ohio doing games.

Leland was a life member of the Wauseon VFW Post and a life member of the Wauseon American Legion Post 265, where he had served as a Past Commander. He served as the Buckeye Boys and Girls State coordinator for many years. He had also served on the Fulton County Draft Board for seven years.

As a lifetime member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Wauseon, he volunteered his carpentry skills when the new sanctuary was constructed.

Visitation for Leland will be held from 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. on Thursday, January 28, 2016 in the Sanctuary of the First Christian Church in Wauseon. The service will also be held at the church at 11:00 A.M. Friday, with the Rev. Ralph Wearstler, officiating. Interment will be private in the Wauseon Union Cemetery, where Military Rites will be performed by the Fulton County Honor Guard. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the Fulton County Fair Memorial Garden Fund or to Buckeye Boys and Girls State.
