Lowell Edward Kulp

Lowell Edward Kulp, age 85, of Archbold, passed away on August 2, 2026, at CHP Defiance Hospice.

Lowell (or Kurly or Lefty) was a curious man who questioned everything, looked for facts, and was a proud member of MENSA. He was an avid reader and loved a good movie, often quoting Rick, who said,  “Here’s Looking at you, Kid” from Casablanca. He was super competitive when playing games with his family, and did not like losing, even to the little ones. Lowell loved his girls and applauded their accomplishments. When they were older and families were thousands of miles apart, he made sure everyone had a name for the anticipated Christmas gift exchange.

Although he had a 35-year career with IBM, he did not neglect the sports he loved. He was a lifelong Cleveland Indians (not Guardians) fan, often quoting stats accurately from decades ago. He played softball, bowled and played golf. Lowell had many home golf courses in Arizona, the UK (during a 2-year IBM assignment in England), Texas, and Ohio. He held trophies for holes in one and won tournaments with the National Left-handed Golf Association across the U.S. He shared his love of golf with his family by giving them great, but often unsolicited, advice about their swing. His golf cart allowed grandkids to have their first driving experience.

After retirement, Lowell swung a leg on his motorcycle to tour the U.S., seeing both Atlantic and Pacific coastlines before heading home to Texas. When Lowell and Judith moved back to Archbold after 30 years in Texas, he looked forward to Wednesday Happy Hour. He valued the "story hour” that they hosted in their garden. He valued the company of good neighbors, friends and family who shared stories ranging from sports to history and genealogy, politics and spirituality, reflecting well-lived lives.

Surviving Lowell is his wife, Judith (Baer) Kulp; daughter, Julie (Scott) Mack of Arizona; daughter, Meredith (Jason) Jones of Utah; daughter, Star Kulp of Archbold; and daughter, Lora Kulp-Ripke of Archbold; grandchildren, Chloe (Joel), Daniel (Olivia), Kyle, Charis, Hannah, Molly, and Theodore; sister, Marlene Yoder, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Kulp, sister, Virginia Dalu, and brother, Virgil Kulp.
