Merle Aeschliman Obituary

Merle D. Aeschliman, age 91, of Wauseon, a devoted follower of Christ, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather went home to be with his Lord on February 22, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.  Merle was born June 12, 1934 to Enos and Dora (Neuhouser) Aeschliman. On January 7, 1955, he married the love of his life, Virginia Rufenacht. His 70-year marriage was a shining example of his enduring love for her and together they built a home rooted in faith, service and love for family.

Merle spent his life working the land as a grain and cattlefarmer, pouring hard work into every sunrise and harvest season. A man of many talents, he was also a skilled carpenter and exceptional woodworker; his hands could fix, create, and restore nearly anything. Along with craftsmanship and hard work, he was a great storyteller.  He enjoyed sharing stories of long ago that carried wisdom, humor, and a deep appreciation for the simple and meaningful things of life. Merle’s greatest joy was spending time with his ever-growing family with tractor rides, birthday parties, playing games, marble rollers and everyday moments shared with his children, grandchildren, and great‑grandchildren. He poured love into each generation, creating a legacy of kindness, strength and unity that will continue for generations.

Merle is survived by his children; son, Steve (Beth) Aeschliman of Wauseon; son, Gary (Sandy) Aeschliman of Archbold; daughter, Sue (Steve) Richer of Wauseon; son, Scott (Sheryl) Aeschliman of Wauseon; 14 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia; parents; sister, Marjorie (Aeschliman) Nafziger; brother, Kenneth Aeschliman; brother, Hyrthal Aeschliman; brother, Galen Aeschliman; brother, Bud Aeschliman; and infant great-grandson, Quin Conn.

Merle’s life reflected his joy in serving. He spent two years in 1‑W service in Cincinnati, a time that strengthened his commitment to helping others with humility and compassion. After retiring from farming, Merle volunteered at the Fulton County Health Center and spent many years serving as usher at Central Church.  His greatest calling was leading his family in faith. Merle made church attendance a priority and lived each day as an example of Christ, with grace and integrity. His quiet leadership and steady walk with God left a lasting impact on his children, grandchildren, and everyone blessed to know him.
