I was a student of Mr. Roth's for a number of years during his time in Yemen.
I'm saddened by the news of his passing. I remember Mr. Roth as being one of those teachers whom you never forget, and whose lessons (especially the ones about life) stay with you for a lifetime. He didn't just coach us on being better athletes, but on being better human beings. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. RIP coach.

It was a great shock to hear about Loren's passing away! I read it from the Sana'a International School FaceBook site. Loren was a great colleague! His friendly eyes on the picture look just they did back then!
I pray that the Lord will bless and comfort you, Nancy and your sons.

Dear Nancy, Philip and Alex, Shocked and so sorry to hear of your loss. Loren will be missed by all who knew him, a real gent. We spent many happy hours together in Yemen and still laugh when I think of our soccer tours to Syria and Kuwait- his African French and my dodgy Arabic, what a combination. Please accept condolences from both Sarah and I

My condolences to the family. Mr. Roth was my PE teacher in Sana'a, Yemen. He was more than a teacher. We stayed in touch after leaving Yemen. He even invites my twinsister and I for his wedding. Unfortunately we were unable to attend. My love and strength to his family. May he rest in peace.

Mr Roth was my teacher and track coach in Yemen from 1983 - 1986. He was absolutely my favourite teacher. He was strict but fair and taught us to be a good person. I am so sad to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. Patricia Marijnissen-Boot (Patricia Boot)

Nancy, Uncle Earl, Yvonne, Marc and extended family.
I know each one of you can appreciate the role Loren played in your life, Be it a friend and husband, son, father or brother he made a mark on each of your lives. Take this forward as you face each day. We all were blessed by Loren.
I will miss you big time Loren. Our first meeting was under a big mango tree in Tshikapa. That fall and for many more years you were both a roommate and a friend. Your were a brother to me and even in the past few months we were still emailing each other and giving each other advice and support. You are forever with me in my thoughts.

Dear Nancy, Phillip and Alex,
Jim and I are holding you in our hearts during this especially difficult time. Loren was a wonderful man. I first met him decades ago in Singapore where we talked for long hours in the Sauder booth at the Singapore Furniture Fair. Discovering we had both been math teachers with a love for travel and different cultures created an instant bond. Discovering Loren's intelligence and compassion led to a respect and admiration for the manner in which he conducted himself.
Discovering his love of family and community led to a warm regard for him and those he loved. I will forever remember sitting across from Loren and Don Carlson in some restaurant, somewhere in SE Asia listening to them sing "Little Bunny Foo Foo," ... complete with hand gestures. And pull out pictures of their families and tell stories of their children when they were young. Still makes me smile when I think of it. I hope it makes you smile too, along with all the other wonderful memories Loren has left behind.
We send our love and prayers. Jan and Jim Sonsteng

Dear Nancy -

It has been years since I had the privilege of meeting you and getting to know you and your parents in Congo. I never knew Loren although my oldest son Raynold probably would. I am so sorry that Loren had to go through the path of cancer. This has not been easy for you and I trust that God's presence is very real to you and that you are assured of many prayers for your family.

Loren was one of the older boys at TASOK when I was there, but I remember him well. In my memory he is forever young, athletic, and strong. So sorry to hear of his passing, but I am heartened to know more (from the comments) of his impact as an adult.

I was very saddened to hear of Loren's passing through Facebook and my prayers are with Nancy and Loren's extended family. It has been 45 years since I have had Loren in my classes and my impressions of him then are I'm sure what has followed him the rest of his life, a compassionate, self-assured, individual of great integrity. A true gentleman as a student at TASOK. I'm sure he was an inspiration to his students.

Nancy:
Since I will be out of the country this weekend, I wanted to write to let you know how much I appreciated Loren and all he did for me, our company, and his coworkers. As you know, we traveled the world together, strengthening relationships with Sauder customers and distributors. We ate in air conditioned Saudi tents, seafood restaurants in Asia, and showrooms in High Point. He was such a kind person, always looking out for others, and developing relationships wherever he went. I will miss his laugh, his wisdom, and his listening ear. We were all so blessed to know and work with Loren.

Dear Nancy and boys, I am feeling such grief for your loss right now. Loren was an amazing hostel brother, so level-headed and sage when insanity ruled our lives sometimes. God gave him a special measure of wisdom and understanding for all us kids and made him the wisest among us. I don't know how he stayed so strong steady but I know he was often the rock in a stormy sea at the hostel. I love you Nancy, big sister. Hugs and mingled tears. Love and prayers, Faith

Nancy & boys, I admire Loren so much for his dedication to the AEC Youth Ministry, even throughout his illness he continued to pour into our kids. The fact that he was still serving there just 2 weeks ago is surely a testament to his passion and dedication to them. He will be sorely missed by all of us. Prayers will continue for your family in the weeks to come. We celebrate his life and that his joy is now complete!
