To The Family: Vernon was one the most amazing people that has crossed my path in life. Very non-judgemental and a soft spoken, gentle and kind man. His Faith was beautiful and was a precious example of how a Christian life should be lead. May the Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ comfort you all, as I know it will. Carol, together you both raised a beautiful family. God Bless

Dear Carol and Family --

It is with great sadness that I write to extend our condolences. Our two families were close friends and both of you always opened your home and farm to us.

I recall coming back home a number of years ago. Our youngest daughter, Victoria, was with Pat and me and she invited a friend to join us on the trip. We thought it would be good for the two girls to see a working farm. I believe they were in middle or high school and being from the Los Angeles area had never been on a farm. Of course, their favorite thing on the farm were the piglets. Holding them was a treat until one decided to do the inevitable all down the front of Victoria's friend. We all got a laugh out of that and remember the look on the face of Victoria's friend to this day.

My Mother spent more time with Vernon, Carol, and family members and your kids referred to her as grandma peanut butter. I believe that is a true story. She talked about your children and the kindness you shown she and my Dad. They were proud of the friendship you all had. I was always pleased that she experienced a good relationship with your children since Dick and I and our families lived in California. I also want to thank Vernon and you for your kindness to Pat. You made him feel welcomed from the day we married -- small town girl and big city guy!!!

When I would visit one of the first people to approach me at church or an event was Vernon. He was a friendly caring and kind man. The last time we saw him was in 2010 at the Memorial Day Service at the cemetery. He was the guest speaker. We were home for my 50th high school reunion.

I know we will always remember Vernon as a very special friend filled with love and kindness. God Bless all of you. Rest in peace, Vernon. Our sympathies to you, Carol, and your wonderful family. Judy and Pat

To family and friends,

I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your loved one.
No matter how long we live we would normally like to live longer. Why is that?
We were created to live forever. God told Adam not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and bad or he would surely die. (Genesis 2:17) This was a small test to see if he loved God. 1 John 5:3 says: "For this is what the love of God means, that we observe his commandments; and yet his commandments are not burdensome. " So why do we die today? Because we inherited imperfection from Adam and Eve. Romans 5:12 says: " That is why, just as through one man sin entered the world and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because they had all sinned." Jesus gave his life as a ransom to pay back what Adam lost (a perfect human life.)
Romans 5:19 goes on to say: " For just as through the disobedience of one man many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of one person many will be made righteous." Jesus will bring our dead loved ones back to life. Acts 24:15 says: "And I have hope toward God, which hope these men also look forward to, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous."

Carol & Family ~

What a testament both Vern & Carol are as true Christians! When I worked @ the Bryan Times w/Carol (late 80's), you could tell she truly loved this man and admired his "life's work" & passion and shared the same vision. To say they have served is an understatement. My condolences to the entire family as I'm sure his passing will leave a void, but good/honest memories will sustain. God Bless & in my thoughts & prayers.

Foods Resource Bank grieves the loss of our beloved friend and co-founder Vernon who, with Carol, inspired countless staff, board directors, and volunteers over the years to believe that each one of us CAN do something concrete and effective to reduce world hunger ... and act on it. (He always said something like, “If you don’t think your one voice makes a difference, think about that mosquito buzzing around your head at night.”) His example and encouragement have helped FRB reach over a million people around the world so far and support them on their journey toward food security. We learned that FRB was on his mind until the end. Vernon, thank you for your sweetness, sense of humor, compassion, tireless work toward justice and ending hunger, and your gigantic, loving heart. Carol and family, we hold you in our hearts.

Several years ago, my broadcasting sidekick, Luke Thaman told me..."There isn't a better farmer or a better person in Williams County than Vernon Sloan." I came to understand what Luke was talking about as my life crossed paths with Vernon a number of times, and I agree with Luke's assessment. Our sincerest sympathies. Vernon worked hard everyday for many years...now it's time for him to rest...we'll miss you Vernon.
